Your Own Inner Consciousness – Explained
Most of us have a pretty vague understanding of our own inner consciousness. It’s not our thoughts, our mind, or our body. You are conscious of your body but you can also be conscious without it. So what is consciousness, exactly?Consciousness can be difficult to comprehend, especially if you’ve taken it for granted and not given it much thought. We’re born with a certain level of consciousness which increases as our brains grow. As adults we have a sense of inner consciousness that drives how we perceive and process stimuli from the world around us. But how much does this ‘sense’ really affect us? And how does human consciousness differ from that of plants and animals? Can we alter our level of consciousness?
Your Crash Course in Consciousness When trying to learn more about consciousness, you need to first dismiss the idea that consciousness can be seen in black and white terms. By this we’re referring to the fact that most of us believe that a person can either be conscious and fully aware of what’s going on around them or unconscious and in that case the lights are out and no one’s home. But consciousness and unconsciousness are not mutually exclusive things. That is, you should view consciousness on a sliding scale; your level of consciousness can change – it can increase or decrease without you losing it completely. In fact there are three stages or levels of consciousness that we’re aware of.
Three States of Consciousness The three known levels of consciousness represent different modes of perception. Each level is a different state of awareness. If you think about it, you can probably easily describe how it feels to be in each of the three states of consciousness.
• Deep sleep. This period of inactivity stretches for several hours right after you fall asleep. It’s a period of nothingness. No thoughts can enter yourhead because your mind is effectively closed off. Your physical body has shut down. The experience of deep sleep is the blank state underlying all other states.
• Dreaming. After a few hours of sleep you start to dream. That is, your subconscious mind turns on and takes you on an imaginative journey.Although the things that you experience as you dream may seem real, they are just constructions of your mind. Your body isn’t connected to the dream experience. It remains asleep and your muscles become rigid.
• Awake. When you are awake, your mind and body are working in tandem. You perceive reality in the third dimension; your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and skin help you to take in sensory information which is then processed by your brain. While awake, your body experiences a number of sensations such as pain and temperature changes which are inherent to the environment you are in.
Simple, right? What if we told you there was another state of consciousness tied to a higher level of awareness? The fourth state of consciousness is called turiya, and it’s tied to the act of being Still. If you would like to find out how to enter turiya through meditation, find out more about the Stillness Movement today.
